Overview
The Diabetes Update section on Thursday focuses on new ideas and therapies relevant to patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism on Friday and Saturday will provide the clinician with updated, pragmatic information about the management of common endocrinologic and metabolic problems, as well as insight into important current areas in clinical research. Formal presentations will be accompanied by question and answer periods with general discussion. Clinical cases will focus on common endocrine problems encountered in clinical practice.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for general internists, family physicians, general practitioners, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals. It is expected that the participants will gain new life skills and strategies to manage these disorders.
Objectives
DIABETES UPDATE
At the completion of this program, course participants will be able to:
- Use newly introduced drugs to control glucose levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes;
- Appreciate the pharmacodynamics of different insulin preparations including once weekly insulins;
- Assess and initiate pump therapy in people with Type 1 Diabetes;
- Understand how stem cells can be used to make new islets to cure Type 1 Diabetes;
- Evaluate for peripheral vascular disease and refer for treatment in a timely manner;
- Appreciate the long term impact of GLP1 receptor agonists/SGLT2 inhibitors and manage any complications associated with their use;
- Manage diabetes in patients who are undergoing cancer treatment;
- Understand the role of diabetes in causing diseases of the heart.
ADVANCES IN ENDOCRINOLOGY & METABOLISM
At the completion of this program, course participants will be able to:
- Optimize treatment of hypoparathyroidism including the use of newly approved parathyroid hormone preparation;
- Assess how to use denosumab in the treatment of osteoporosis;
- Evaluate a patient with a low alkaline phosphatase and decide which patient needs treatment with asfotase alpha;
- Evaluate patients for primary hyperaldosteronism;
- Appreciate how artificial intelligence/machine learning can help in the evaluation of nodules visualized on ultrasound and deciding whether a biopsy is indicated;
- Advise when it is safe to monitor a patient with known thyroid cancer and avoid surgery;
- Know treatment options for thyroid eye disease and when to use of teprotumumab;
- Obtain an overview of how to manage congenital adrenal hyperplasia and learn about new therapeutic approaches;
- Deliver high quality care for patients with an incidental pituitary nodule;
- Treat lipid disorders in children and young adults;
- Manage elevated triglycerides.

In support of improving patient care, the University of California, San Francisco is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Physicians:
UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 18.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency.

The Commission on Dietetic Registration accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to dietetic practice and have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.
Geriatric Medicine:
The approved credits shown above include 7.25 credits toward meeting the requirement under California Assembly Bill 1820, Geriatric Medicine.
Maintenance of Certification:
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 18.25 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points.
