Cancellation Policy

Cancellations received in writing at least 30 days before the conference start date will receive a refund of registration fees minus a [10%] administrative fee. Requests received between 30 days and 14 days before the start date will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be issued within 14 days of the start date. Please send cancellation requests through our Refund Request form.

UCSF Office of CME reserves the right to cancel or postpone this program if necessary; in the event of cancellation, course fees will be fully refunded. We are not responsible for other costs incurred, such as non-refundable airline tickets, hotel penalties, or other related personal expenses.

Overview

The UCSF Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for the Hospitalist Course is a hands-on experience to learn the techniques of bedside ultrasound. Live demonstrations, case review, and didactics will complement hours of hands-on practice sessions. Participants will gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to integrate bedside ultrasound into clinical practice. 

We will continue our new tradition of offering an advanced track and a traditional track– both of which can count towards the SHM POCUS COC. The traditional track will match prior year content and focus on the core skillsets needed as a practicing hospitalist (and those required for mastery for the SHM Certificate of Completion). The advanced track is targeted towards those with prior POCUS exposure (ideally a prior 2 day workshop or more) and those who seek to use more advanced skills or to be a POCUS educator. Both workshops are designed to maximize the participant’s time practicing ultrasound skills on live models. The groups will have a small ratio of participants learning (3:1 or less at hands on for traditional, 4:1 or less for advanced) from experienced instructors who utilize POCUS daily in the hospital medicine clinical environment. Further descriptions of both tracks are below.

Traditional Track:
The Traditional Track will be based on practical skills needed for the hospitalized patient with a focus on protocols and cases that underscore how POCUS can be applicable in the real world. Specifically the participant will learn to obtain imaging of the heart, lungs, abdominal organs, and vascular structures as well as appropriate ultrasound guided technique for procedures such as thoracentesis, central venous access, and paracentesis. The workshop also includes a special session on program development and economics of POCUS.

Advanced Track:
The Advanced Track is designed for those with prior exposure to and skills in POCUS that want to bring their skillset to the next level and/or be POCUS educators. It will focus on mastering basic pocus exams, adding acquisition, interpretation and clinical integration for more advanced exams & interpretation (e.g Cardiac Output/VTI, Valves, VEXUS, etc), and develop POCUS teaching skills across a variety of POCUS devices. To achieve this it use a small group format with interactive didactics and workshops alternating with scanning skill sessions.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, the University of California, San Francisco is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

 

Objectives

Traditional Track
At the end of the workshop, a participant will have enhanced skills and strategies to:

• Apply the fundamental principles of ultrasound technology and perform basic operation of a portable ultrasound machine;
• Utilize techniques to perform bedside ultrasound for the purpose of procedural guidance (paracentesis, thoracentesis, central venous catheter placement, and lumbar puncture);
• Utilize techniques to perform focused diagnostic ultrasound examinations at the bedside, including imaging of the heart, lungs, and major abdominal organs;
• Recognize the indications for basic point of care ultrasound exams and protocols, in light of the clinical utility and limitations of bedside ultrasound imaging;
• Practice interpretation of normal and abnormal ultrasound images.

Advanced Track
At the end of the workshop, a participant will have enhanced skills and strategies to:

• Apply the fundamental principles of ultrasound technology and perform basic operation across a broad range of Point of Care Ultrasound Devices;
• Demonstrate mastery of basic POCUS exam acquisition & interpretation and the ability to teach these skills to novice POCUS users;
• Utilize techniques to perform advanced POCUS examinations at the bedside, including those of the heart, lungs, and major abdominal organs;
• Recognize the benefits and limitations of more advanced POCUS ultrasound exams and protocols, in light of the clinical utility and limitations of bedside ultrasound imaging;
• Practice advanced interpretation of normal and abnormal ultrasound images.
