Overview

The UCSF Ophthalmology Update will feature local and internationally known experts in the areas of glaucoma, cataract, retina, uveitis, pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery, neuro-ophthalmology and refractive surgery. The program is designed for comprehensive ophthalmologists including those who perform cataract surgery, manage patients with glaucoma, optic nerve disorders, and retinal disease.  Optometrists, nurses, and other health professionals will also find educational value from the topics presented.

This year’s program includes an optional hands-on lab component to try out the newest surgical and imaging technologies (at no additional cost to registrants).

Objectives

An attendee completing this course will be able to improve skills and strategies for:

  • Effect of cataract surgery alone and cataract surgery in combination with glaucoma surgery on the intraocular pressure;
  • Advantages and disadvantages of monofocal, toric, and premium intraocular lenses in patients with keratoconus, diabetes, uveitis, and glaucoma;
  • Management of diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy;
  • Determining who is a candidate for treatment and mechanisms of action for therapy for geographic atrophy;
  • Advances in management of choroidal neovascularization in diseases such as age-related macular degeneration;
  • Updates on workup and management of pediatric and adult retinovascular disease;
  • Trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage devices in the management of advanced glaucoma;
  • Identifying candidates for ciliary body cyclodestructive procedures;
  • Consideration of local vs systemic therapy in uveitis.
