Overview
Increasing appreciation of the unique needs of women patients and women health care providers has created a need for innovative educational programs on women’s health. Increasingly difficult management decisions must be made in diverse ambulatory environments and via telemedicine. Attention to health disparities and the care of vulnerable patients and close collaboration with diverse specialists is essential for quality care for all women. This innovative program will provide a practical update on a full range of common but controversial issues in women’s health. Emphasis will be placed on new developments in preventive care for women, issues in reproductive health, clinical strategies in the diagnosis and treatment of common gynecologic and medical disorders of women. Interactive questions will amplify learning and ample time will be provided for questions and discussion. This course, taught by UCSF’s best teachers, is presented by the Division of General Internal Medicine, in close collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. The course is sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is designed for family physicians, internists, gynecologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and all others involved in providing quality health care for women.
Onsite and Live Stream Meeting
Registrants will have the option to select in person attendance or remote online attendance.
Login instructions along with the digital syllabus will be shared with attendees a week before the meeting. Included in your registration fee is access to the course recordings on demand for 30 days after the course. You must tune in to live conference (in person or remotely) to claim CME.
Objectives
The purpose of this course is to increase competence and improve clinician practice in women’s health. We specifically anticipate improvements in skills and strategies to:
- Discuss and implement new guidelines for prevention and early detection of cancer in women;
- Discuss and implement new vaccine guidelines to prevent common infections;
- Diagnose and treat common and controversial problems in women's health including heart disease, lipid disorders, osteoporosis, anemia, STIs, HIV, incontinence, anxiety and depression, menopause, and obesity;
- Diagnose and treat common skin conditions in women;
- Counsel patients about best practices in contraception and abortion;
- Understand the impact that COVID-19 has had on women’s health and treat patients with COVID-related conditions;
- Address common clinical issues of older women;
- Treat common sports injuries in women;
- Manage sexual issues in women;
- Improve the management of chronic pain and substance use disorders,
- Optimize patient communication and shared decision making;
- Develop best practices to address health disparities and care for vulnerable patients;
- Improve interprofessional teamwork and collaboration;
- Advocate for quality health care services for all women.
Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Physicians
UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 13.50 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency.
Interprofessional Continuing Education Credit (IPCE)
This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 13.50 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.
Geriatric Medicine
The approved credits shown above include 8.50 credits toward meeting the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1820, Geriatric Medicine.
Internal Medicine Physicians
Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn up to 13.50 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC points. Attendees must complete the course evaluation within 30 days of the activity completion in order to receive MOC credit.
Nurses
For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.
Pharmacotherapeutics CEUs for Nurses
This activity is designated for a maximum of 10.00 pharmacotherapeutic credits towards meeting the requirement for nursing pharmacology continuing education. Nurses should claim 0.1 CEUs for each contact hour of participation in designated pharmacotherapeutic continuing education.
Physician Assistants
AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM from organizations accredited by the ACCME.
Pharmacists
The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.
AAFP
The AAFP has reviewed Controversies in Women's Health 2024 and deemed it acceptable for up to 13.50 Live AAFP Prescribed credit(s). Term of Approval is from 12/12/2024 to 12/13/2024. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
