Overview
UCSF Optometry Course 2025 is a 7-hour continuing education seminar designed to provide optometrists in all clinical settings with cutting-edge yet clinically-applicable information, based on the extensive experience of several optometrists and ophthalmologists at UCSF and San Francisco VA.
This year’s keynote speaker is Michael Trainer, MD, of our neuro-ophthalmology department, discussing how to manage patients presenting with transient vision loss. Learners will also enjoy two (2) glaucoma hours, as well as other updates regarding pediatric contact lens fittings, optic neuropathies, epiphora, and LAL (light adjustable lens) technology.
Proceeds from the UCSF Optometry Course support the UCSF Optometry Residency program, where we provide two select optometrists with a rich post-graduate education in ocular disease, neuro-ophthalmology, specialty contact lenses, and primary eye care.
This event will again be virtual via Zoom webinar format, with live speakers and speakers readily available for Q&A. All optometrists in all states are welcome. Please register via the UCSF Office of CME today!
Registration is $120 for optometrists. Cancellations in writing prior to 5PM PST on 3/28/25 will receive a 50% refund. No refunds offered after 3/28/25. For all payment-related questions, please email https://tiny.ucsf.edu/cmehelp
Registered paid guests will be sent a separate email by Daphne Chan in the days prior to the event containing the Zoom webinar registration link. Once guests register their name and email via Zoom, they will automatically receive the link to join the actual Zoom webinar.
All courses are COPE-pending. Learners will receive access to digital handouts after the conference. Attendance for credit will be monitored. You may obtain CE credit just for the courses you attend. CE certificates will be emailed in the 4-6 weeks following the event.
Live Stream Meeting
This course will be offered as a virtual conference. Login instructions along with the digital syllabus will be shared with the attendees a week before the meeting. Included in your registration fee is access to the course recordings on demand after the conference and for 30 days after the course. You must tune in to the live conference (in person or remotely) to claim CME.
Accreditation
In support of improving patient care, the University of California, San Francisco is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Objectives
- To review the mechanisms of action and evidence-based role of the GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists in the management of obesity and diabetes
- To review the secondary outcomes from randomized clinical trials that lead to the concern for GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists causing progression of diabetic retinopathy and their criticisms
- To propose evidenced guidance for optometrists on the management of diabetic patients treated by GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists
- Understand the necessary testing associated with patients presenting with epiphora
- Be able to differentiate between dysfunction of the secretory lacrimal system versus the excretory lacrimal system
- Recognize when to refer patients to Oculoplastics for surgery
- Become competent in how to discuss this intraocular lens option with your patients and determine if they would benefit from the LAL
- Be able to refer potential LAL candidates, and set patient expectations prior to referring
- Understand the optometrist's role with the LAL
- Know the clinical characteristics that are concerning for optic neuropathy
- Know possible etiologies of optic neuropathies
- Know testing and management for each type of optic neuropathy
- To review landmark glaucoma studies and the role of IOP and other well-established risk factors in open angle glaucoma
- To address common systemic co-morbidities and evaluate their relationships with open angle glaucoma
- To review data assessing any risk associated with open angle glaucoma and certain lifestyle modifications such as exercise and supplements
- To review common systemic medications and their relationships to IOP and open angle glaucoma
- Review POAG (diagnosis, prevalence, risk factors, pathophysiology)
- Review treatment (topical, MIGs, surgical) using case discussion/examples
- To help primary eyecare providers identify pediatric patients who can benefit from pediatric contact lenses
- To provide information that will help a primary eye care provider comfortably navigate common pediatric contact lens fitting and training sessions
- Develop an approach to the patient presenting with transient visual phenomena
- Recognize “red flag” symptoms that require urgent neuro-ophthalmic evaluation
