This interdisciplinary conference offers an update for clinicians who care for children, youth, and adults with developmental disabilities and complex health care needs. Due to continuing concerns with the COVID 19 pandemic, we will continue the live stream format, employing a live stream webinar and user-friendly interactive virtual platforms. The live presentations will be recorded and made available for 30 days so you can review any content as needed. As in past pre-pandemic conferences, non-profit exhibitors will be available to provide resources to help you to deliver more informed care for patients and clients of all ages.

Our expert faculty will address topics of interest to pediatricians, family physicians, nurse clinicians, psychologists, internists and others who are involved in the health care of children and adults with developmental disabilities. This year’s conference features discussions on conservatorship reform, trauma informed care, mental health supports, deprescribing antipsychotic medications, and emergency planning to adapt to climate change. While the conference is designed and accredited for health care professionals, we welcome families and individuals with developmental disabilities to also attend.

This activity is developed by a community planning and advisory committee made up of self-advocates and representatives from the following agencies: UCSF, Stanford University, The Arc San Francisco, Golden Gate Regional Center, East Bay Regional Center, State Council on Developmental Disabilities, Support for Families, WITH Foundation, the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and the California Department of Developmental Services.

This course will be offered as a virtual conference. Login instructions along with the digital syllabus will be shared with the attendees a week before the meeting. Included in your registration fee is access to the course recordings on demand after the conference and for 30 days after the course. You must tune in to the live conference (in person or remotely) to claim CME.



  1. Improve systems of care for patients with disabilities with an increased awareness of social and cultural differences and disparities, structural bias, and implications for quality access to healthcare;
  2. Describe regional and state organizations and current policies relevant to access to mental and behavioral services;
  3. List key tasks to assure effective health care transition from youth to adulthood and describe the importance of self-determination and self-advocacy;
  4. Assess the impact of Covid-19, other emerging infections, and climate change on patients, families and healthcare workforce;
  5. Screen for co-occurring conditions (i.e., dual diagnoses) and coordinate care with mental health services and community resources;
  6. Distinguish the impact of traditional behavioral and strength-based approaches on the health care and education of neurodiverse populations
  7. Adopt practical skills to prevent, identify and manage dental complications in children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities;
  8. Explain durable medical equipment needs for children and adults with cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders and recognize when and to whom to refer;
  9. Describe what experience and research holds for the future of communication therapy in neurodiverse populations;
  10. Apply new national guidelines in the care of children, youth and adults with Down Syndrome;
  11. Recognize the importance of deprescribing psychotropic medications and indicate when to do so.


The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 13.75  AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM . Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency.

Family Physicians
The AAFP has reviewed 22nd Annual Developmental Disabilities: An Update for Health Professionals and deemed it acceptable for up to 13.75 Live AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 03/02/2023 to 03/03/2023. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts  AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.

Physician Assistants
AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and  AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

This educational activity is recognized by the California Board of Psychology as meeting the continuing education requirements toward license renewal for California psychologists. Psychologists are responsible for reporting their own attendance to the California Board of Psychology. Psychologists from other states should check with their respective licensing boards.
